Leak cause Downtown Tunnel lane closure

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Motorists were forced to file single-file into the Downtown Tunnel after the weather caused a pipe to leak Thursday.

According to Elizabeth River Crossings, the cold weather caused a 4” cross-pipe with the tunnel’s fire suppression system to develop a small leak before 5 a.m. Because of the leak, crews were forced to shut down the right lane of the tube to repair the road.

Westbound traffic was reduced to just one lane in the tunnel, causing backups to Ingleside Drive in Norfolk.

The lane finally reopened about three hours later.
