Ladybugs to feast on pests at NBG

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk Botanical Garden released 5,000 ladybugs in greenhouses to keep pest insects away.
Vickie Pepper, Plant Propagator for Norfolk Botanical Garden, said the ladybugs were released in three different greenhouses Friday. The ladybugs will eat mainly aphids and mealybugs, known as piercing/sucking insects.
According to Pepper, the pest insects will drink fluids from the plants and in large populations, will destroy plants in the greenhouses.
"[They're] safer for the environment, safer for our workers," Pepper said. "If there's a safer option, a better option, a greener option, we would much prefer to use that."
The ladybugs will feed and reproduce, keeping the gardens greener by not using chemical pesticides.
