Heavy rain causes havoc in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The heavy rain from Wednesday's storm caused streets to quickly flood, even closing down a popular lights display.

The "Garden of Lights" at Norfolk's Botanical Garden did not open for business Wednesday, leaving residents who wanted to see the displays disappointed.

"It was the last chance before it went away so I'm kind of bummed," Oscar Tarango said.

Cars were turned away and officials said heavy rain flooded a few displays and electrical boxes.

"It was a lot of wind and a lot of rain," Norfolk resident Shaun Baroughton said.

The intersection of Tidewater Drive and Virginia Beach Boulevard disappeared due to excessive flooding, leaving behind stalled cars.

"It just stalled out the engine pretty fast," said one driver who was sitting in his car.  "It's been raining all day.  We thought we could make it.  We tried to get over and there was just to big of a puddle and it died."

The storms did not turn out as severe as expected and managed to leave behind a couple of rainbows.
