Families react to Truman cancelation

NORFOLK, Va (WAVY) - The delayed deployment of the USS Truman is stirring up mixed emotions among Navy families who were prepared to temporarily say goodbye to their loved ones.

Family members of the USS Eisenhower's crew are also on an emotional rollercoaster. Unlike Truman, Eisenhower will deploy at the end of the month.

Latesha Young's brother-in-law is on the Truman and she said she is excited for him to spend more time with his new bride.

"He's pretty happy," Young said. "He didn't really want to go and leave his wife. He is a newlywed, and they really didn't want to separate so soon."

For others, the cancelation is more of a burden than a blessing.

"People have let their leases and family homes go. Now they have to wait, and say goodbye again," Tanya Gilmore said. 

Eisenhower's crews returned from the Gulf in December but are already preparing their goodbyes. However,  many service members say this is just part of what comes with living the Navy life.

"You just kind of take it as it comes. We knew what we signed up for when we signed our contract," USS Truman crewmember Joshua Gilmore said. "We just have to deal with it I guess."
