NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Zoo is asking for help in naming its baby girl siamang.
The baby siamang was born on Aug. 20 and her gender was just recently discovered. Now, she needs a name, and zoo officials are letting the public handle that task.
In order to suggest a name, zoo fans need to like the Virginia Zoo’s Facebook page . There, they can submit their suggestions, which need to be in by Jan. 15. The top four names will be selected by zoo officials and the final vote will be up to the public.
The person who suggested in the winning name will win a lunch date with the siamang zookeepers and a $200 shopping spree in the zoo’s gift shop.
“Siamangs are critically endangered and this is a very important baby,” Virginia Zoo’s executive director Greg Bockheim said. “We’re hoping that if we can involve our community in choosing a name for her, it will help raise awareness about the challenges siamangs face in the wild.”
