Credit union opens at Norfolk school

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A group of Norfolk High School students is learning valuable life skills with some unique training.
The brand new “Booker Branch,” an in-school credit union set up and managed by students, opened at Booker T. Washington High School Tuesday.
Students get real-time job experience as they open accounts, make deposits and withdrawals and use the skills introduced in business and accounting classes. 10 On Your Side asked why a program like this is so important.
“The earlier you can start learning about your finances, the better,” Joyce Bailey with Port Alliance Credit Union told WAVY.com.
The Booker Branch is operated in a partnership between the school’s Career and Technical Education Department and Port Alliance Credit Union.
