NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - With the approval of city council Tuesday, the City of Norfolk is continuing to develop Wards Corner and the neighborhoods around it in an effort to create a safer environment.
Norfolk Vice Mayor Anthony Burfoot sees continued development in the city as a stabilizing factor for communities.
"We're just trying to give people a real opportunity to be able to live in decent and safe neighborhoods," Burfoot told WAVY.com. "[The plan is to] get rid of blight, basically, disperse poverty and give communities a real opportunity, a real shot in the arm to succeed."
Wards Corner is seeing a revitalization and since last year, the city has acquired or torn down apartments in the nearby Denby Park area.
The revitalization has come through public and private partnerships after many years of planning.
