NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - In honor of Black History Month, author My Haley was in Hampton Roads.

Haley wrote "The Treason of Mary Louvestre," the true story of a slave from Norfolk who, during the Civil War, copied plans for the CSS Virginia and walked them to Washington, D.C. to Union forces.

"It was a little known piece of Americana," Haley said. "It was dramatic and exciting and I thought it needed to be told."

Haley is the widow of Alex Haley, the author of "Roots."
