CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Chesapeake firefighters battled an early morning fire in the 1700 block of Burson Dr. Saturday.

Fire crews responded to reports of a structure fire at 2:47 a.m. When crews arrived on the scene they found a single story, brick home on fire, with heavy flames breaking through the roof, Capt. Mike Thibeault of the Chesapeake Fire Department said in a released statement.

No one was inside the house and firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about 20 minutes. The excessive heat caused extra crews to be called in to knock down hot spots inside the structure, according to Thibeault.

The home sustained significant damage throughout, as most of the roof was destroyed by the fire said Thibeault.

The homeowners were spending the night at their in-laws, who live next door, because their air conditioning had not been working. They were alerted to the fire by their dogs barking, according to reports.

Thibeault said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
