NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News Shipbuilding is offering a voluntary severance program to 1,200 eligible employees, a spokeswoman confirmed to WAVY.com.
Christie Miller says this move is part of a plan to reduce the company's salaried workforce and remain competitive in the marketplace.
Employees interested in participating can apply now until 4 p.m. on September 28. Salaried NNS employees working in Hampton Roads who will be age 60 or older by December 31, 2012 are eligible. Miller says employees who participate will separate from the company no later than December 30.
She stressed that the shipyard is still hiring select salaried positions, mainly entry-level.
