PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Recently, 10 On Your Side's Nicole Livas took a trip she describes as "life changing".
Nicole traveled to a girl's orphanage in Haiti as a part of a medical and faith mission trip.
"Our team of 25 was made up of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and others," Nicole said. "We gave out immunizations, and medicines, and treated the orphans and the people in the town of Ouanaminthe, near the border of the Dominican Republic."
Nicole said the group saw about 100 patients a day. She helped with patient education, sorting and dispensing medicine in the pharmacy and checking patients in.
The town of Ouanaminthe was not affected by the earthquake, but conditions in the area are very poor. Many residents don't have electricity, running water or septic systems.
"What they do have is an amazing spirit and faith. It was my first mission trip, and I don't think it'll be my last," Nicole added.
Check out Nicole's Facebook page for more pictures from her trip.
