NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A slain Newport News mother was remembered at a vigil Monday evening by friends and family.
Police say 27-year-old Phyllis Vinston was killed near her home at Marshal Courts Apartments on West 34th Street. Investigators believe one or two men were shooting about a block from Vinston's home a little before 7 p.m. Saturday.
Vinston was shot in the crossfire of bullets. Neighbors say she died trying to get her sons away from the gunshots.
Although many said everyone knows each other in the neighborhood, police say no one has spoken up with suspect information.
"I just don't understand, if it was their family member, they'd want somebody to say it for them," said a friend of Vinston's.
