NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Living Museum reopened its lower level Tuesday after months of repairing damage caused by a flash flood in August.

Museum spokeswoman Judy Triska says two new exhibits were revealed the day of the ribbon-cutting. One features salamanders and another features crustaceans.

The museum is located at 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd. Its lower level suffered significant damage worth thousands of dollars in repair work. High school students even stepped in to help with some renovations.

"We are so grateful for the outpouring of community support," the museum's Executive Director Page Hayhurst said.  "From the volunteers who cleaned, painted and moved office materials to the donors who funded our insurance deductible with their gifts, walk-athon and corporate fundraising, we appreciate all the ways our friends have helped. We could not have done it without you!"

Regarding the museum's financial problems, Hayhurst said museum officials are working with the city for next year's budget.

The museum is open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Regular admission is $17 adults and $13 children ages 3-12.
