NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Three people were sent to the hospital Saturday morning following an accident involving a tractor trailer cab.
Around 10:30 a.m. police say a tractor trailer cab traveling on Interstate 64 eastbound blew a tire which caused the truck to sideswipe a Chevy Cobalt and then both vehicles struck trees in the median in the Newport News area.
The driver of the tractor trailer was flown by Nightingale to Norfolk Sentara Hospital with serious injuries, according to a police spokesman. A passenger in the truck was taken to Riverside Hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.
The driver of the Chevy Cobalt was also taken to Riverside Hospital. Their condition is also not known at this time.
The crash caused two eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 and one westbound lane to be closed as crews cleaned up a fuel spill.
The accident caused a traffic back up on Interstate 64 in both directions. Traffic backed up approximately eight miles westbound and six miles eastbound, according to VDOT.
