NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The son of a Virginia delegate is in the Newport News City Jail. Newport News Police spokesman, Lou Thurston, tells WAVY.com officers arrested 49-year-old Derek BaCote Saturday afternoon.
Thurston says BaCote and his girlfriend were at his house in the 1200 block of Emma Drive Friday night when BaCote's girlfriend says they got into an argument that turned physical. Thurston says she told police BaCote hit her and attempted to choke her.
Thurston says the victim left BaCote's home and drove to her home in Carrolton where she told a relative what happened. The relative told her she needed to call police which she did.
Thurston says the victim headed back to Newport News and reported the incident. She went to Riverside for an examination and treatment.
Thurston tells WAVY.com there was an emergency protective order issued.
WAVY.com called the jail and learned BaCote is charged with assault which is a misdemeanor, and impede blood circulation and respiration which is a felony. Thurston says the felony charge stands for strangulation.
Derek BaCote is the son of Delegate Mamye BaCote, a democrat in the 95th district of Newport News.
