NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney spoke at Victory Landing Park Monday afternoon.

Romney's speech began shortly before 4:45 p.m., more than 30 minutes earlier than planned, because of the inclement weather. Gov. Romney was joined on stage by Gov. Bob McDonnell at the beginning of the speech, followed by Rep. Scott Rigell (R-Va.).

The rainy weather didn't stop local voters from gathering to see Governor Romney.

He told the crowd, "People wonder why it is I am so confident we are going to win. I'm confident because I see you here on a day like this. This is unbelievable. Thank you so much."

The governor laid out his plan of attack if he gets elected in a speech that was kept short and finished within 20 minutes. Romney touched upon sequestration cuts by confidently stating his intention to keep the country's military strong.

"I'll make sure we will rebuild our economy and I will make sure we have the strongest military in the history of the world. we will keep the military second to none," Romney said.

Virginia is a critical state in the road to the White House. Michael Griffith says he is an out of work teacher and braved conditions to see what Romney could offer.

"I've been without full-time employment since February and I'm looking for some help," Griffith said.

Though Romney wasn't on stage for very long, he said exactly what Joe Edwards wanted to hear.

"He's a complete 180 of Obama," Edwards said. "Everything that I like in him is completely opposite of a guy that's trying to destroy this country."

The Pew Research Center reported Monday Romney is leading President Obama by four points among likely voters.

Before his stop in Newport News, Romney delivered an address on foreign policy at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va.
