NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Presidential candidate Mitt Romney spoke at Victory Landing Park Monday afternoon.

Police spokesman Lou Thurston told WAVY.com drivers may experience minor delays along major arteries and local interstates between 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

West Avenue between 23rd Street and 26th Street will be closed from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thurston said, at this time, there are no plans to close additional city streets.

Republican supporters made Mitt Romney signs and bought last minute tickets Sunday in preparation for his speech at Victory Landing Park.

Supporters were picking up their tickets Sunday at Romney's local Victory Centers.

WAVY.com caught up with volunteers at Governor Romney's headquarters in Newport News. They were making posters and signs, and getting ready for Monday's campaign rally.

One volunteer was helping out, even though she is not old enough to vote in the election.

"It really stinks that I can't vote, but I understand why," said Margaret Vaughan, a Newport News teenager. "I know a lot of kids my age have no idea what they're talking about. But I think it's important for me to say my voice and try to help as much as I can to try and get those votes."

The hand painted posters will be displayed at the Victory Landing Park event.

Attendees are encouraged to park near the intersection of Jefferson and Hampton Avenues and take the shuttle, which will start running at 2:30 p.m.

If you are interested in attending the event, tickets are required and may be picked up at the following locations:

Newport News Victory Office

  • 12715 Warwick Blvd. Newport News, VA 23606

Norfolk Victory Office

  • 193 W. Ocean View Ave. Norfolk, VA 23503

Tickets may be picked up from these locations prior to Monday's event.

Tickets may also be obtained by visiting www.mittromney.com/VA

The candidate's wife will also be in Virginia tomorrow. Ann Romney will be in Chester, Virginia, which is south of Richmond.
