NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A pedestrian and a bicyclist were struck by vehicles in separate accidents Tuesday afternoon.

According to Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department, one man was struck crossing the 12000 block of Jefferson Avenue shortly before 3:30 p.m. Eley says a driver of a 2009 Kia was driving northbound in the far left lane when a light turned red and he slammed on his breaks. The driver slid through the intersection and struck a 46-year-old homeless man crossing the street.

The pedestrian in the incident was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the driver was summoned for reckless driving.

A man riding a bicycle was struck on Fort Eustis Boulevard just west of the Reservoir at 3:11 p.m. A Lincoln Town Car traveling in the same direction struck the bicycle rider who was not wearing a helmet. The rider suffered a head injury and was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The investigation in the Fort Eustis Boulevard accident is ongoing and Eley says police are not sure if charges will be filed.
