NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A man wanted for murder in Newport News turned himself in to police late Saturday night.

Newport News police issued warrants for 20-year-old Doren Ellis Lee Saturday evening following the shooting death of 49-year-old Patrick McWanza Hewett in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Lee is now in the custody of the Newport News Sheriff's office, according to a police spokeswoman.

Police responded to a call of shots fired at 55 Colony Square Ct. around 1 a.m. Saturday  and found Hewett lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Hewett's death was the city's 16th homicide of the year.
