Deadly fire caused by careless smoking

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Fire investigators have ruled careless smoking as the cause of a deadly house fire in Newport News Saturday.
A 59-year-old man and a dog died in the fire.
Crews responded to the 600 block of 73rd Street at 3:29 a.m. after receiving reports of a house fire.
When firefighters arrived, they were able to get the man out of the house. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries, according to a news release from the Newport News Fire Department.
Fire officials identified the man as Bernard Fitzgerald. A dog was also found dead inside the home.
Fire investigators did not find any fire detectors inside the home, according to the release.
The fire was ruled accidental.
