NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News police arrested a man after a witness says he took lawn tools from a 72-year-old woman's home.
Police responded to a burglary in progress in the 1700 block of Chestnut Avenue just after 1 a.m. on May 16.
Holly McPherson with Newport News Police says the adult son of the victim came to his mother's assistance during the burglary. Police say the son found an acquaintance, Lawrence Brooks, walking out of the shed carrying a weed eater. The lawn mower was also missing from his mother's residence.
McPherson said police were in the area approximately 10 minutes later and noticed Brooks at Hampton and Roanoke avenues pushing the lawn mower and carrying the weed eater.
Brooks was later identified as the offender and was charged with grand larceny, burglary and possession of burglarious tools.
