NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Officials say unattended cooking materials likely caused a fire that condemned an apartment's kitchen.

According to Ken Lay with the Newport News Fire Department, crews were dispatched to an apartment on Christopher Newport Drive just before 3 p.m.

Lay said the fire was under control within 10 minutes. The single apartment's kitchen was declared condemned and no one was home at the time.
