NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - On a chilly afternoon in Newport News Saturday the Virginia Living Museum Groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter for Hampton Roads.
During a short ceremony WAVY-TV meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler, who was on hand to assist in the prognostication, proclaimed:
"Hear ye! Hear ye! In Newport News, Virginia on this glorious Groundhog Day February 2nd 2013. The Virginia Living Museum Groundhog, seer of seers, prognosticator of all prognosticators, awoke to the call of Hampton Roads! He greeted his handler, George Mathews, Jr. and after casting a joyful eye toward his faithful followers the Virginia Living Museum Groundhog proclaimed 'A BRIGHT SKY ABOVE ME SHOWED MY SHADOW BESIDE ME,
SO 6 MORE WEEKS OF WINTER IT WILL BE!'"
The Virginia Living Museum groundhog is the official groundhog forecasting weather for Hampton Roads, according to a spokesperson from the museum.
The prediction was somewhat controversial as only hours before in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil predicted that spring would come early.
