NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News groundhog has tested positive for the rabies virus.
The animal was seen in the area of Blunt Court and Beverly Hills Drive and the Peninsula Health District wants residents in those neighborhoods to be aware.
If there is any chance you were exposed to this animal, in the form of a bite, scratch or contact with its saliva, contact the Health Department at 757-595-7340. After hours, call Animal Control at 757-595-7387. The Department also wants to know if your pet had direct contact with the animal.
The District would like to remind all citizens to follow these three important rabies prevention guidelines:
1. Vaccinate your pets.
2. Report all exposures to animals (usually bites and scratches) to your doctor and the local health department.
3. Enjoy wildlife from a distance – don’t feed or encourage wild animals such as raccoons, skunks or foxes to visit your premises.
