NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A furnace is being blamed for a fire at a Newport News home Tuesday morning.
Battalion Chief Steve Pincus with the Newport News Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched to the 700 block of Wilderness Way in the North End for a report of a house filling with smoke. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke coming from the attic of the two-story home.
The cause was found to be involving a problem with the furnace located in the attic. Pincus said the estimated value of the damage was $35,000. The home was condemned.
All occupants of the home were able to escape safely, though one person was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Another was evaluated at the scene.
Five people have been displaced. No firefighters were injured.
