NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Mother Nature left a big mess for the staff at The Virginia Living Museum when heavy rain caused flood damage inside and outside Tuesday night.
“We have to act pretty quickly,” George Matthews told WAVY.com. “Our dedicated staff and volunteers had to remove animals that were in the path of flood waters and also to make sure all of the electrical items were turned off, and a lot of the animals were secured for the evening.”
Volunteers and cleanup crews spent Wednesday soaking up water from carpets.
A few of the animal habitats outside of the museum had to be secured and cleaned. Luckily, no animals were hurt.
The museum plans to reopen Thursday.
