NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A family of five was displaced from their home after it caught fire Saturday morning, according to fire officials.
Newport News fire crews were called to the 7200 block of Abraham Court near the Hampton city line line for a house fire around 5:02 a.m, Acting Fire Chief Scott Liebold told WAVY.com. When firefighters arrived on the scene they found heavy smoke coming from the front door.
Crews entered the home and quickly began to attack the fire, bringing it under control in under 20 minutes.
Two adults and three children who were home at the time were able to escape the burning structure unharmed, Liebold said.
According to fire investigators, the fire started in the kitchen which was confirmed by one of the residents.
The home suffered about $10,000 in damage, with the most significant damage located in the kitchen. The rest of the house also suffered damage caused by smoke.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.
