Newport News, Va. (WAVY) - A late night fire along a Newport News road Friday sent flames and smoke shooting from an apartment.

Battalion Chief J. Douglas Carper said the fire sparked around 11:45 p.m. at 34 Heritage Way. When crews arrived they found flames and smoke coming from the apartment.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Crews were able to get the fire under control about 10 minutes after their arrival, Carper said. A cause is still under investigation.
