NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A 4-year-old child's leg was grazed by a bullet at a Newport News home Thursday evening.
Police were called to the 600 block of Ridley Circle for a report of gunshots at 8:20 p.m.
According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, the child's mother was outside of the home when she heard what she said sounded like young men fighting followed by multiple gunshots. She then heard the child scream and went to check on her.
Police say the child was standing by a door, and the mother saw her leg was bleeding. According to police, a bullet had grazed the child's leg.
Thurston says the child was taken to a hospital with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries.
Police say there is no suspect information at this time.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
This was the second shooting in Newport News within two hours. In an earlier shooting, a man in his 20s was shot in the collarbone and arm , suffering non-life threatening injuries.
