VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A Virginia Beach mother says she was very upset when she found out her son wandered away from school Monday afternoon.
Sharmese Carmon says her 5-year-old son Jarkarii wandered away from Diamond Springs Elementary School unnoticed.
The kindergartner was found walking outside near the intersection of Sullivan Boulevard and Haygood Road. A citizen notified police who took the child back to school.
"Somebody needs to be held accountable for that because anything could have happened to him," Carmon said. "With him wandering off, being special needs, it's not like he could tell someone where he was going or where he was coming from."
Carmon told WAVY.com she is now considering an out of district transfer for her son to attend another school.
A spokesperson for the Virginia Beach School System said a joint investigation is underway with Child Protective Services.
