VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Mary Eileen Butts, the 79-year-old woman who went missing on Sunday, was found alive this afternoon, Beach police said.

Police said that she was located behind a CarMax on Bonney Road at about 4:10 p.m. about a mile-and-a-half from her home. She is now being treated at a local hospital.

"I just thought miracles happen all the time and this could be that miracle," said Butts' granddaughter Lauren Allred. "Thank God someone saw her."

Butts went missing Sunday morning.

"She told me she was just wanting to go find some flowers," Allred said.

Every day since, family, rescue crews and neighbors searched the Kings Grant area. Every day they came up empty.

"I never thought something bad happened to her," Allred said. "I never thought she was dead. I just knew we would find her one day."

Two employees at CarMax spotted a woman lying in the bushes.

"She was shaking," said employee Louie Berbert. "She didn't respond to me. I said 'Ma'am, do you need any help?' and she didn't reply."

Berbert called for help.

"The officer that arrived immediately asked her name and got on his radio and said they had found her," Berbert said.

"She always use to tell me 'I'm fit as a fiddle,' and she is strong," Allred said. Butts needed that strength. She had to deal with Sunday's record-breaking heat heat and rain.

"We went in and we talked with her," Allred added. "She said she was mad she got stuck in that rain storm last night."

She's now resting in the hospital. Family says she's lost about 20 pounds, but is OK. She is being kept at Virginia Beach General over night.

"I'm so thankful that someone found here," Allred said.

This has been a massive coordinated search effort between Virginia Beach Police, EMS Volunteers and neighbors. Dozens of people took time off work and search for hours and days.
