NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Midtown Tunnel crews will shut the tube down Sunday morning if flood waters crest above six feet.

According to an Elizabeth River Crossing news release, tunnel crews have keep a close eye on the path of Hurricane Sandy and the anticipated tide levels on Sunday.

Based on the predicted tide levels for Sunday, crews are prepared to close the tunnel before 9 a.m.

"Based on current tide predictions from Sewell's Point, tomorrow morning's high tide is expected to reach 6 feet, which is a trigger point to close the tunnel," said Bruce Wilkerson, ERC's chief operating officer. "We will have our crews on standby to make sure we can close the tunnel quickly ahead of that 8:55 a.m. high tide if flood conditions become likely."

Motorists should avoid travel during the storm and check WAVY.com for the latest on the Midtown Tunnel.
