NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - OpSail 2012 included a barrage of military re-enactors and WAVY News’ Andy Fox caught up with some on Front Street.

Above all else OPSAIL is a celebration of our good will to other nations, a celebration of our patriotism, honoring American maritime and military history.

In 1862, Fort Norfolk protected Norfolk and Portsmouth done so bravely by the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues

“We were protecting Norfolk and the shipyard and on the Portsmouth side was a matching fort which is now gone, Fort Nelson, Capt. Richard Cox told WAVY.com. “Thisplace was such a strategic area for the confederacy why? Cause the guns were here and as the ships from the north came up the Elizabeth River. Their guns which were stationed on the side of the ship and unable to move, so they would have to turn around and leave.

Re-enactors digging a foxhole are here from World War II with a real important message

“I think it's very important to remember what these men gave many did not get to grow up,” Matthew James said. “Some died, some of my family members did not come home so I think it is very important to remember. America without being asked saved the world from Nazism and Japanese imperialism, and instead of showing our imperial presence we helped rebuild the world.”
