SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A single-vehicle crash killed a man Wednesday afternoon in Southampton County between Franklin and Courtland on Route 650, according to troopers.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said a 2004 Dodge pickup truck was traveling northbound on Route 650 when it ran off the roadway to the right, struck a tree and caught fire around 1:15 p.m.

The driver, 49-year-old Kent George Zernicke of the 3000 block of Forest Pine Road in Franklin was killed as a result. Anaya said Zernicke was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The cause of the crash remains unknown and Anaya said troopers have not determined if alcohol was a factor. The crash is still under investigation.
