VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - An elderly man died after he missed a turn and struck a tree in the Creeds area Saturday afternoon, according to police.
Virginia Beach police spokeswoman Tonya Borman said the driver lost control in the 500 block of Princess Anne Road just after 4 p.m. The driver missed a bend in the road, continued straight, crossed two driveways, and struck a mailbox before hitting the tree.
Medics took the man to a local hospital where doctors pronounced him deceased.
He has been identified as 81-year-old John Calvin Twiford. A cause of death has not been released, but Borman said speed and alcohol were not factors.
Borman said it looks as though a seat belt was not used.
