Loud noises used to chase eagles away

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The City of Norfolk has applied for a permit with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove eagle nests from the Norfolk Botanical Garden due to its proximity to the Norfolk Airport.

In 2011, two eagles were struck and killed at airport according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Per the USDA's recommendations the city will work to remove the three nests from the garden to ensure the eagles' safety.

"With an increasing number of eagles and an increasing number of aircraft, these strikes are becoming more common," USDA's Scott Barras said. "You see more situations where eagle management might have to be undertaken in order to protect the aircraft and the eagles."

Barras says noise from paintballs and fireworks could be used to disperse the eagles as part of the permit.
