Local SWAT member nominated for award

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A SWAT team member who risked his life is in the national spotlight.

Tactical Medic Leader Jeffrey Yates is nominated for the America's Most Wanted All-Star Award.

The scene was Portsmouth. The SWAT team was called to this Churchland house when a man barricaded himelf inside, after threatening a mental health worker with a knife.

This is the first time Portsmouth officers have talked to the media about what happened. Normally they wouldn't, but this SWAT team feels so strongly about its medic program and the person behind it, they want everyone to know.

America's Most Wanted All-Star Award
