HUDDLESTON, Va. (AP/WAVY) - Virginia conservation officers say two Williamsburg men drowned in Smith Mountain Lake.
Sgt. Bryan Young of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says the bodies of 18-year-old Kelvin Staffon and 47-year-old Daniel Leannis were recovered about 2 p.m. Saturday in the Craddock Creek area in Bedford County.
Young tells media outlets that the men had gone out in a boat off Beach Island. Staffon went in the water but began to struggle. Leannis jumped in to help and both men went under the surface.
Young says the bodies have been taken to a funeral home in Bedford.
A memorial fund has been established for the Staffon's family.
