Heavy rain floods Norfolk, Portsmouth

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Rain overnight caused flooding in several downtown Norfolk roads Wednesday morning.

One of the biggest problem areas was the intersection of Monticello Avenue and East Princess Anne Road.  Several cars were stuck in the water as police blocked the intersection off with flares and helped stranded drivers.  

Joe Taylor was one of the drivers that got stuck in the water. Taylor abandoned his car when he realized the water was up to his waist.

Other Norfolk residents skipped driving and walked to work on Wednesday morning.  

"I've seen a lot of side streets with a lot of flooding," said Byron McNair checking out the flooding on East Princess Anne Road. "Not this high so far. This is the highest I've seen already."

McNair said the underpass at 21st Street and Colley Avenue was flooded on his way into work, too.

By 6:30 a.m. the water had receded at Monticello Avenue and Princess Anne Road and cars were able to pass.

Norfolk wasn't the only area to see some flooding. The Village at Western Branch in Portsmouth off Churchland Boulevard also received some heavy rain, leaving vehicles partially underwater.  Around 7:30 a.m., the water was beginning to recede.
