Proposals revealed for Fort Monroe

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - A company tasked creating plans to develop Fort Monroe presented several options at a meeting Thursday evening.

Sasaki Associates presented five options with mixed residential, retail and restaurant areas anchoring majority of the development.

The plans also include a 7-mile trail around the perimeter of the peninsula. The developers aim to not tear down any building, but rather renovate them and preserve history.

In the presentation, the developers touted they have worked to get the public's opinions on what they would like to see at Fort Monroe.

"It's a process and everytime we meet with the public we get an idea of what the public wants and what the public is interested in and this is just another phase in showing various options for Fort Monroe," Fort Monroe Authority Executive Director Glenn Oder said.

Planners say they hope to fund the project with little or no public money, and that tax revenues from businesses will be enough.

In the presentation, the developers said the $8.8 million coming from the Commonwealth now to sustainFor Monroe would decrease with financial sustainability, as would $2 million in federal funding and grants.

Another presentation will be held Friday morning starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Bay Breeze Conference Center, 490 Fenwick Rd.

"Well, it's a continuing process of engaging the public in the design process. We don't want this to be a "roll-out, take the plan, take it or leave it,' [situation]," Oder said.
