HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - A man wielding a baseball bat was shot and killed after he charged two officers early Sunday morning, according to Hampton Police.

A Hampton police officer was in the 100 block of West Pembroke Ave. just before 12:30 a.m. when a disorderly man, who was in the roadway, struck the officer's patrol car with a baseball bat, according to Cpl. Jason Price with the Hampton Police Department.

When a second officer arrived immediately thereafter, the two officers confronted the man and told him to drop the weapon. The suspect then charged the officers with the baseball bat and the officers fired their weapons, striking the man, according to police.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had also struck several other citizens' vehicles prior to the first officer's arrival.

Police have identified the man as Bryant Michael Weiford, 26, of Hampton.

The two officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard policy in police-involved shooting incidents.

Hampton police are conducting criminal and administrative investigations, which is also standard practice in police-involved shootings, according to a police spokesman.
