HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - The scene of a hazmat investigation at a Hampton home was cleared Tuesday evening when officials found the substance was not dangerous.
According to Capt. Anthony Chittum with the Hampton Fire Division, crews responded to a home in the 50 block of Hampshire Glen Parkway shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday evening.
A family of two adults and three children were quarantined inside of their home because they received a package with what they thought was a hazardous substance because two of the residents had felt sick.
A postal worker was held with his vehicle while officials determined what the substance was.
All five people are being quarantined within the home and were asked to shower to decontaminate themselves. Chittum reports one Hampton police officer that went into the home was being decontaminated, although he was not feeling ill.
Newport News police have provided two units and four people and Hampton police are the primary crew on scene with seven units.
