Hampton U. students honor Dr. King

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Hundreds gathered at Hampton University Sunday afternoon to remember and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The ceremony began at the Emancipation Oak and a group marched across campus to Ogden Hall. Students say it’s important to honor the sacrifices made by the fallen civil rights leader.

“It was overcoming the struggle that he never wanted to give up,” Moriah Lark told WAVY.com. “I kind of admire that because I wouldn’t be standing in the position I am today if it wasn’t for him and a lot of people wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him. So to just be able to continue that legacy, and we do this every year, it just means a lot to me.”

Dr. Kirk T. Houston was the keynote speaker at the event. He is the pastor of Gethsemane Community Fellowship Baptist Church and the Norfolk School Board Chairman.
