HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - A four-year-old freeze on tenure and faculty promotions at Hampton University has been lifted.
The freeze was one of several money-saving steps taken by the university in 2008 to avoid layoffs during the economic downtown.
Provost Pamela Hammond tells The Daily Press that lifting the freeze will increase the number of tenured faculty. That will help Hampton as it seeks long-term research grants.
Hammond says about 20 faculty members are expected to apply for tenure in the fall.
About 90 of university's 339 faculty members have tenure.
