HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - A family’s dog perished in a Hampton house fire Tuesday morning, according to fire officials.

Assistant Fire Chief Craig Topping with the Hampton Fire Division said crews responded to the 500 block of Day Street in the Wythe section of the city around 10:20 a.m. for a report of a residential fire.

Once on scene, they found heavy smoke showing from the one-story home. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in 10 minutes.

One dog was removed from the home deceased, Topping said. Three adults and two children were displaced.

Topping said there were no working smoke detectors in the home.
