HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - The Hampton Health Department has confirmed the 48th case of rabies in the city since 1998.
John Schellenberg with the Hampton Health Department said a raccoon was attacked by a family dog Monday. The raccoon was picked up in the Sunset Creek area of Victoria Boulevard.
Testing on the raccoon confirmed it positive for rabies.
The dog did receive a booster shot before it attacked the raccoon, Schellenberg told WAVY.com. The dog was placed under a 45 day observation at the family’s home.
Schellenburg urges citizens to make sure pets are up to date on vaccinations for rabies. Do not feed wild animals or leave food outside for pets that could attract wild animals.
Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should wash the wound right away and call your doctor or the health department at 757-727-2570.
