HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Six adults have been displaced after an apartment fire along West Pembroke Avenue in Hampton Thursday afternoon.
According to Capt. Anthony Chittum with the Hampton Fire Department, crews responded to the 400 block of West Pembroke Avenue just after 5 p.m. for a fire that reportedly started in a lower unit and spread between units on two floors. Firefighters found flames showing from the building upon arrival.
Chittum said flames were blowing out windows of the basement and it took crews about an hour to get the fire under control.
Crews were inside the building fighting the flames, but Chittum said they were forced out. There is no word on any injuries.
The American Red Cross will be assisting those displaced in the fire. The fire does not appear to be suspicious and looks to be accidental, Chittum added.
