HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - The tornado that touched down in Hampton Friday night caused more than $4.3 million in damage, according to the city's initial assessment.

Single-family homes accounted for the majority of the damage, with 206 damaged for a total estimated amount of $3,552,710.

In addition, 99 multi-family homes sustained $308,000 in damage,  three businesses sustained $347,810 in damage, and agricultural costs hit $100,000.

In addition, public property sustained damages estimated at $57,000.

Official information from National Weather Service showed the tornado winds were 98 mph, and its path was 3.5 miles long from Chesapeake Avenue to Spratley school.

The two hardest-hit neighborhoods - Merrimac Shores and Victoria/Park Place - remain without power. Many poles were snapped and lines are down. Both neighborhoods are blocked off to vehicles while power crews replace poles and lines.

Crews are working to restore power by midnight.

City crews continue to clean up public areas. Clearing debris blocking roads is the first priority. Bulk crews will begin pickups in neighborhoods as soon as they can. If possible, residents should keep compostable tree debris separate from other materials so it can be composted.
