Graduation party shooting haunts mother

SURRY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - More than six months have passed since Ty'Quan Johnson was killed by a stray bullet at a graduation party in Surry County and no arrests have been made.

The shooting occurred during the evening hours June 8 along Alliance Road. A gunfight broke out in the group of about 150 teenagers. Eighteen-year-old Johnson was struck and died on the way to the hospital.

"They say it was something you would see on TV," Johnson's mother Katrina White said. "You had to duck and dodge all under the cars. Bullets were flying everywhere."

White has been grieving her son since that night.

"It's just a nightmare," White said. "Some days I don't even want to get out of the bed. He was so smart. He had a pretty smile. He was just my baby."

Johnson had a 3.8 GPA at Sussex Central High School and had just accepted a full scholarship to play football at North Carolina Wesleyan College.

"He might have made pro," White added. "He didn't have a chance to get married. He didn't have a chance to give me grandkids."

Even more troubling to White is that the person who pulled the trigger has not been arrested.

Surry County officials say the investigation continues and said there were several guns fired at the scene.

They said they continue to interview witnesses and the attorney general's office is helping in the investigation.

"I just need justice," White said. "I need some kind of peace of mind and I'm not going to give up until everybody goes to jail that was involved."

Deputies have arrested one man and charged him with attempted murder, but it is not believed he was the who shot Johnson.
