PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - In all seven Hampton Roads cities, prepare to see a lot of red promoting the message of heart disease and stroke awareness.

"This year is going to change where more people are going to become aware," advocate Brynn Smith told WAVY.com

The campaign is sponsored by the American Heart Association, and advocates national awareness about heart disease.

"If it can happen to me, it can happen to you," survivor Sharon Chachere said.

Chachere was 40-something gym rat who had to go through triple bypass surgery.

"Your family history is one thing you can not change," Chachere said.

To protect yourself, doctors recommend controlling your risk factors which include diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking.

WAVY News 10 is a sponsor for the American Heart Association's Heart Ball which will be held Feb. 23 at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront starting at 6 p.m. through midnight.
